High Heels Can Lead To A Dozen Foot And Leg Injuries
Yes, those heels are
killer, but they may be killing you much more than you think! I know they look
fabulous, but sometimes we find them to feel like masochistic torture tools and
many podiatrists will insist they are.
Many statistics show
that high heels are one of the biggest factors attributing to foot problems in
women. Up to one-third are suffering from permanent problems as a result of
prolonged wear. Most people generally assume that high heels are dangerous; we
get this when we see barefooted women walking slowly black stilettos in hand.
Emerging research, however, is showing that there is a lot happening beneath
the surface that we do not know about. Muscle groups, tendons, and our bones
are put at risk each time you strap them on.
Wearing heels can cause
inflammation of the connective tissue at the bottom of the foot. This can
result in oral anti-inflammatory, steroids, colorist injections, walking boots,
and even crutches. Is fashion really worth your feet? A study done in 2012
revealed that among women in their 20’s high heels had already changed their
normal gait, even when they were not wearing the shoes. More frequent heel
wearers had shorter calf muscles compared to the control group, who rarely wore
heels, putting stress on the muscles with every single step heel or no heel.
The damage is not only
occurring in the foot, but in your legs as well! A high heel alter your very
posture, displaces ankle bones, puts strain on the knee joint, and tightens the
surrounding tendons. Most people are dressing to impress when they put on those
beautiful shoes, but not many think about the health of their feet and legs.
There are consequences, is your health not more important than your looks?
